Blessed are the merciful
This blessing is found among those chosen by Jesus and recorded in Matthew 5. Let us transcribe it.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7.
Who are these people? Are they those who feel pity for others? Are they those who show benevolence toward humans, as defined by the Portuguese dictionary? Let's see!
Let's see how God defines His mercy.
“All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.” Psalm 25:10.
This Bible verse has depth. Because the paths of the Lord are His law. And although truth is written without the definite article that normally precedes it, which, if it were so, would be making another reference to God's law, the term “His covenant” is another mention of His commandments, see:
“Then he proclaimed his covenant, which he commanded you, the ten commandments, and wrote them on two stone tablets.” Deuteronomy 4:13.
In addition, his testimonies, also referred to in the quoted text—Psalm 25:10—are also his laws, which are the work of his hands.
Therefore, since His mercy is His law or commandments, then the merciful are those who practice divine mercy, the Law of the God of heaven.
