Listen to my voice
Jeremiah 7:23 This is what I commanded them: “LISTEN TO MY VOICE, and I will be your God, and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways I command you, so that it may go well with you.”
Jeremiah 11:4 which I commanded your fathers on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, saying: LISTEN TO MY VOICE and do everything I command you; then you will be my people, and I will be your God.
Jeremiah 11:7 From the day I brought your fathers out of Egypt until today, I have constantly warned them: HEED MY VOICE.
This is the Holy Spirit’s exhortation to His people. But what is the voice of the Lord?
There is a claim, which I consider mistaken within the religious milieu known as Christian, that the Bible is the word of God. I am not saying that it is not divinely inspired, though I do not consider it entirely inspired either, even though there was divine consent for the recording of what was initially written in it. I say “initially” because not everything that is in it today was there from the beginning.
Since those considered Christian claim that the Bible is the word of God, and Jesus said that heaven and earth will pass away, but not His word, how dare some of these religious people claim that what they call the Old Testament—that is, the thirty-nine books of the oldest scriptures—have been abolished?
“The words of the Lord are pure, like silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times.” Psalm 12:6.
The psalmist also says:
The Law of the Lord is perfect. Psalm 19:7, first part.
Since this is so, then they cannot have been abolished.
In that case, what was abolished?
Religious people who make such a claim base their assertions on Paul’s text, which says:
“And we are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel might not gaze at the end of what was fading away. Indeed, their minds were hardened, for even to this day, WHEN THE OLD COVENANT IS READ, the same veil remains. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it abolished. And even to this day, when Moses is read, the veil remains over their hearts. But when one of them turns to the Lord, then the veil is taken away.” 2 Corinthians 3:13–16.
What I have highlighted in uppercase letters in the text above is not a reference to the Ten Commandments, but rather to the covenant made by Moses and the people of Israel, which involved the sprinkling of animal blood on the sacred vessels and even on the people.
God’s Law was ratified—that is, confirmed by God—for that nation established at that time, for it had existed since before the dawn of human existence on Earth.
Consider that Cain was considered a transgressor when he took the life of his brother Abel.
Abraham received testimony from God Himself regarding his obedience to God’s commandments and laws. See:
“Because Abraham obeyed MY VOICE and kept My commandment, My precepts, My statutes, and My laws.” Gen. 26:5.
From this text, it follows that God’s voice is His law. And I believe there is no need for the conjunction “and” after the noun “voice” in the text above. A comma could be used, or the gerund “keeping” from the verb “to keep” in the verb form, in order to avoid the conclusion that Abraham did two distinct things.
If God’s law, which is His Word, had been abolished, as those who do not love God claim, then today one could freely transgress the commandments of the Decalogue. But the claim of abolition they make applies solely to the fourth commandment, where God commands us to keep the Sabbath holy by resting on it. For the other commandments are accepted as valid.
Furthermore, God’s Covenant, which is eternal, consists of the Ten Commandments. See:
“He declared to you His Covenant, which He commanded you, the Ten Commandments, and wrote them on two stone tablets.” Deuteronomy 4:13.
In Numbers 10:33, 14:44; Deut. 19:8, 29:25, the covenant is called “The Covenant of the Lord.” And the last reference states: “Then it will be said: BECAUSE THEY ABANDONED THE COVENANT OF THE LORD, the God of their fathers, WHICH HE HAD MADE WITH THEM WHEN HE BROUGHT THEM OUT OF EGYPT.” Deut. 29:25.
And regarding the law of Moses, another text says:
Note that the first covenant with the blood of animals was made by Moses before he received the tablets of the Ten Commandments. See:
“Then Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, ‘This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you concerning all these words.’” Exodus 24:8.
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to Me on the mountain and wait there; I will give you the stone tablets, the law, and the commandments that I have written, so that you may teach them.’” Exodus 24:12.
Therefore, the claim that God’s law has been abolished is spurious and a flagrant violation of what God has made an obligation for every man, as stated in Ecclesiastes 12:13.
