1) What does “Sabbath” mean?
Rest. Lev. 23:3 and 32.
2) What does God call His rest?
My Sabbaths. Ezek. 20:12; the Lord’s Sabbath. Lev. 26:2; Ex. 16:25, 20:10; the holy day of the Lord. Isa. 58:13.
3) What did God call the solemn days on which there was rest, as set forth in the ceremonial law?
Sabbaths. Lev. 23:3. Your Sabbaths. Lev. 23:32. His Sabbaths. Hos. 2:11.
4) Who gave the Sabbath to man?
Jesus. Ex. 20:1
5) How do we know this?
Jesus said, “For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Luke 6:5.
6) If Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath, then what is the Lord’s Day?
The Sabbath.
7) On what day was John caught up and given the vision of Revelation?
On the Lord’s Day. Rev. 1:10.
8) What sign did God establish between Himself and His people?
The sanctification of the Sabbath. Ezek. 20:20.
9) What does He require of us to be His servants?

10) When God created the heavens and the earth, on what day did He rest?
On the Sabbath. Gen. 2:2.
11) Why did God rest?
God did not make man for the sake of the Sabbath, but the Sabbath for the sake of man. Mark 2:27. So He rested as an example for us.
12) Which day has God blessed since the foundation of the universe?
The Sabbath. Gen. 2:3.
13) To which commandment does the observance of the Sabbath correspond?
To the fourth commandment of God’s Law. Ex. 20:8.
14) How should we observe this day?
By not speaking our own words, nor seeking to do our own will. Isa. 58:13. By not doing any servile work on it. Ex. 20:8–11.
15) How should we call it?
Delightful; the holy day of the Lord; worthy of honor. Isa. 58:13.
16) What does God call the breaking of the Sabbath?
Desecration. Isa. 56:2 and 6.
17) What promise did God make to those who guard against desecrating the Sabbath?
“I will also give them, in my house and within my walls, a place and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give each of them an everlasting name that will never be cut off.” Isa. 56:5.
18) What other promise does God make to Sabbath-keepers, including the children of foreigners?
“I will also bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar.” Isa. 56:7.
19) On which days may we perform menial labor?
On the six days of the week between the two Sabbaths. Ex. 20:9.
20) What work did Jesus do on the Sabbath?
Work related to His ministry. Mark 3:3–4; Matt. 12:9–12; Luke 6:6–11.
21) What did the apostle Paul say about the time when we should work?
“Work day and night so that you may not be a burden to your brothers.” 1 Thess. 2:9.
22) What kind of work was the apostle referring to?
The kind of work Jesus spoke of: “Work not for the bread that perishes, but for the bread that endures.” John 6:27.
23) When does the Sabbath begin and when does it end?
It begins at sunset on the sixth day and ends at sunset on the Sabbath. Neh. 13:19; Lev. 23:31 and 32.
24) What kind of work should we not do on that day?
Menial labor. Ex. 20:9; buying, Neh. 10:31, 13:16–17; selling, Amos 8:5 and 6.
25) How do we know that we should not cook on that day?
“You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.” Ex. 35:3.
26) Which Sabbath did God say that the congregations’ gatherings no longer pleased Him?
The Sabbaths of the festivals. Isa. 1:13 and 14.
27) On which Sabbath did the disciples pluck heads of grain to eat, for which the Pharisees rebuked Jesus?
On the Jewish Sabbath, a festival Sabbath. Luke 6:1.
28) How do we know that the Sabbath on which Jesus told a man to carry his mat was a festival Sabbath?
Because the Bible passage recounting the episode begins by saying: “After this there was a festival among the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.” John 5:1.
29) How many Sabbaths were there in each Jewish festival?
Two solemn Sabbaths, in addition to the Lord’s Sabbath. Lev. 23:7, 8, 21, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31, 35, 36, and 39.
30) What other Sabbaths were instituted by the Lord, and which does He call “Sabbaths”?
The annual Sabbath, which was observed every seven years, and during which neither sowing nor reaping was to be done. Lev. 25:1–7; and the Jubilee Sabbath, the fiftieth year. Lev. 25:8–13.
31) At what time did the land rest for two consecutive annual Sabbaths?
During the Jubilee. It rested during the seventh weekly year and the eighth year, which was the fiftieth. Lev. 25:1–5 and 10–13, 21, and 22.
32) What was the day following the Passover called by the people of Israel?
Saturday. Lev. 23:6 and 7.
33) On what day did Jesus rise from the dead?
On the Sabbath. Matt. 28:1.
34) How do we know this?
“And as the Sabbath was ending, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb; and behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.  ... But the angel, answering, said to the women, ‘He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.’ Matt. 28:1–3, 5, and 6.
35) When does a day begin?
At sunset on the previous day. Neh. 13:19.
36) Regarding the Sabbath, the seventh day, what exhortation does the Holy Spirit give through the writer to the Hebrews?
“Let us be careful lest, since the promise of entering His rest remains, any of you should seem to have fallen short. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall into the same pattern of disobedience.” Heb. 4:1 and 11.
37) What day does the author refer to in chapter four of Hebrews?
The seventh day, which corresponds to the Sabbath, the day of rest. Heb. 4:4; Ex. 20:10.
38) What day of rest did God establish as a perpetual covenant for His people?
The Sabbath. Ex. 31:16.
39) How do we know that it is for us as well, who were once Gentiles?
God condemns showing partiality in the law. Mal. 2:9.
“For a Jew is not one who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But a Jew is one who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise does not come from men, but from God. And such are we, whom He has also called, not only from among the Jews but also from among the Gentiles.” Rom. 2:29; 9:24.
40) What accusation does God make through the prophet Ezekiel?
That the priests turn a blind eye to the Lord’s Sabbath and thus profane the Lord in their midst. Ezek. 22:26, first part.
