What do you do for me?
There is a hymn in the evangelical community that goes, “I died, I died on the cross for you—what do you do for me?” And there are several commands given directly by Jesus to His servants and children. Which ones do you know?
One of the commands Jesus left for His disciples is: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel…”. Every Christian knows this, but what few know is “what the gospel is.” Even many of those who consider themselves leaders and who have disciples do not know what the gospel is. Thus, both they and those they lead fail to teach the gospel and fail to fulfill the Great Commission.
After Jesus’ ascension into heaven, the Romans persecuted his disciples in Jerusalem. And they were scattered; see:
“And Saul, too, approved of his death. AND ON THAT DAY A GREAT PERSECUTION AROSE AGAINST THE CHURCH IN JERUSALEM; AND ALL WERE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE REGIONS OF JUDEA AND SAMARIA, except for the apstles. And some devout men buried Stephen and mourned him deeply. And Saul was ravaging the church, going from house to house; and dragging off both men and women, he committed them to prison. BUT THOSE WHO HAD BEEN SCATTERED WENT EVERYWHERE, PREACHING THE WORD.” Acts 8:1–4.
Christians and evangelicals know that Jesus paid the ransom for His people with His own life—and it was not cheap. But the “Go” command is not being fulfilled by those who claim that Jesus has set them free for a new life. Paul said: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20.
He also said: “For none of us lives to himself, and none dies to himself. FOR IF WE LIVE, WE LIVE TO THE LORD; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” Romans 14:7–8.
Jesus said: “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” Matthew 16:25.
Therefore, to gain eternal life, one must lose one’s life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, which is the law or commandments of God. Have you been doing this?
